Three Refuges Chanting

The Three Refuges or Three Jewels are found in every school of Buddhism stretching back to the original teachings of the Buddha.  On Sundays, we first chant them in Pali, a literary language in which the teachings of the historical Buddha were first written down a few hundred years after his passing (or parinirvana) — prior to that, what became the “Pali Canon” had been an entirely oral tradition preserved by monastics.  While many chants have become translated as they’ve traveled around the world, the Three Refuges are still almost universally chanted in Pali around the world, even if then translated (like at Still Point on Sundays).
